Overview
CARDIOLOGY
Cardiology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of heart conditions and diseases. Cardiologists are specialists who deal with a wide range of cardiovascular issues, including:
- Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): Blockages or narrowing of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle, often leading to angina or heart attacks.
- Heart Failure: A condition where the heart is unable to pump effectively, leading to fluid buildup and symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue.
- Arrhythmias: Abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, which can affect the heart's ability to pump blood efficiently.
- Valvular Heart Disease: Disorders of the heart valves, such as stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage), which can impair blood flow through the heart.
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Elevated blood pressure that can damage the heart and blood vessels over time, increasing the risk of heart disease.
- Congenital Heart Defects: Structural problems with the heart present at birth that may require medical or surgical intervention.
