Overview
ANESTHESIA
Anesthesia is a branch of medicine focused on the use of drugs and other methods to prevent pain and sensation during surgery and other medical procedures. Anesthesiologists are medical doctors specialized in anesthesia, pain management, and critical care. There are several types of anesthesia:
- General Anesthesia: Induces a state of unconsciousness and insensitivity to pain throughout the entire body. It is commonly used for major surgeries.
- Regional Anesthesia: Blocks pain in a larger area of the body, such as during a spinal block or epidural, often used during childbirth or surgeries on the lower body.
- Local Anesthesia: Numbs a small, specific area of the body. It is typically used for minor procedures, such as dental work or stitching a small wound.
- Sedation: Ranges from minimal sedation (relaxation while awake) to deep sedation (where the patient is on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened). It is used for procedures like endoscopies or minor surgeries.
